Wash your hands, please.

Hello Warriors,

As part of our grace and courtesy badge, under Care of Self, comes hand washing. In Spark Studio, we always emphasize washing your hands so we don’t spread germs. Mark Rober, an engineer, inventor and has a Youtube channel, made the following video. He used to work for Nasa, too!! In his video below, you can see how germs spread and why it’s important to wash your hands!

Many of us were talking about germs and how it’s important to stay clean so we don’t pass germs. Here is the video of the experiment we did in class.

If you would like to repeat the activity at home, you will need a plate, some water, ground black pepper and a small dish with soap. Pour some water onto the plate, then shake ground pepper into the plate. Take one finger and dip it into the plate with the ground pepper. When you take your finger out, you will see some flakes on it. Now, take that same finger and place it into the small dish with soap. This step may take some of the black pepper. Now take the same finger into the plate, as soon as the soap touches the pepper, almost all of the pepper will go to the edge of the plate. That’s the magic of soap on germs.

Here are some challenges for you:

Sing: Sing the handwashing song (choose the one you like!)

Handwashing Songs

For our readers: Handwashing cards and The immune system

For our writers: Write out the handwashing process

  1. Moisten hands with water and then apply liquid soap.
  2. Rub hands together, away from the flow of water, for 20 seconds.
  3. Rinse hands from soap under running water.
  4. Dry hands with a clean, disposable paper towel. Ensure that there is no recontamination of the clean hands.
  5. Turn off the faucet using a paper towel.
  6. Throw the used paper towel into a hands-free trash can

For our more experienced writers: Make a book about the steps to washing hands. Include in it the times you should wash your hands. (For example, when you sneeze, when you come in from outside before you eat…)
